21 days

I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape – the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show. ~Andrew Wyeth

Today was the first day all season that it actually felt like fall and like winter might be right around the corner. We’re expected to get our first freeze tonight. Leaves, which seem like just changed into their glowing oranges and fiery reds yesterday, were being flung off branches in large masses by a chilly wind I haven’t felt for months.
I’ve always loved fall and winter. Not only due to all the holidays, birthdays and time off from work, but there is something easier about the cooler seasons. In spring and summer, there is the anticipation and expectation that new, exciting things will bloom. In winter . . . it’s okay if things are a little barren and if life makes you wait, if things slow down. No one expects anything to spring from the bitter cold.
Not only the first sign of the changing weather, but today was also a long day at work. I kept getting bothered by my bangs that have grown out and I haven’t maintained, falling into my face and over my eye. A nagging reminder that I am way overdue to get in for a cut. I need to make an appointment soon. I also need to remember to call and cancel my Arizona homeowners’ insurance policy – which I just assumed was canceled when the house was sold – but, I just got the renewal notice in the mail.
But, first things first, I simply need to remember to wear a coat tomorrow!
