the smell of spring

I got up this morning and pulled my blinds up and opened my window wide and just stood for a moment, taking in the flood of memories that the single smell of a fresh, cool spring morning can bring back . . . the last days of the school year, the anticipation of summer vacation, signing yearbooks, counting down the days until my Texas vacation with my grandparents, cheerleading try-outs, job hunting at the end of college, some heartaches, many other joys . . . I simply love the smell. But, no matter how old I have been or where I have been at in life, the one thing this smell represents to me is: change.

This year is no different. As I inhale the lovely fresh air, I’m on the brink of changing jobs. It isn’t set in stone yet, but I’m almost there and I anticipate this time next month, I’ll be back residing in a cube farm. (A cube farm only 2.5 miles away from home, doesn’t get any better than that!)

My job change also signifies yet another step for me moving forward and away from my life in Arizona. My job now still subconsciously ties me to a lot of the emotional baggage I’m trying so desperately to leave behind. I applied and pursued my current job at a time I was running from issues in my marriage that I was trying to cover up with the excitement and focus of a new job. Then, of course, my job was the ticket back home for me when I needed to run away once and for all. Getting a new job, in a new company, in a new environment – it’s important to me for so many more reasons than just career development. To me it signifies yet another change, a new step, toward shedding the final layers from my past. Last layer still pending? The money pit house. That’s a whole other post, though :).
Tonight, I capped this lovely spring day with a relaxing dinner out on a patio in a quaint historic district with my girlfriends. Everyone was coming out of the wood work to enjoy the refreshing weather – a SWAT team, a cowboy claiming to have just been kicked by a horse, and an old gentleman with a boom box and gospel music blaring – spreading the love of Jesus, among some other interesting characters, all strolled by in the course of an hour or two. I guess everyone feels energized by this change in weather!
Today truly was the first real taste of warm weather and I couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming months! I can’t wait . . . it’s going to be a great summer!
